The concept of crystals having healing powers is literally ancient history. For instance, the Ancient Egyptians buried their dead with quartz to help guide them safely to the afterlife. The Ancient Greeks crushed hematite on their soldiers to help them be invincible. And, the Japanese believed that crystal quartz represented power and wisdom. But, the idea of using crystals as a sex toy is quite new.

In a day where just about everything is going as high-tech as possible - i.e., Amazon is testing deliveries by drones, sex toys have Wi-Fi, and Siri answers all of our pressing questions - New York-based sex toy company Chakrubs is taking the opposite approach.

Chakrubs, which launched in 2012, are sex toys made of crystals and gemstones, including amethyst, jade, rose quartz, obsidian, pure red jasper, clear natural quartz, black onyx, and pure blue aventurine. They are essentially dildos, but the company chooses to refer to them as "instruments of pleasure" because the word "dildo" typically connotes a more anatomically correct looking device, and Chakrubs are not that. To spell it out for you, the name Chakrubs combines the Sanskrit word, "chakra" (which translates to "wheel," but means the centers of spiritual power in the human body) and the word "rub," which needs no explaining.

More importantly, the philosophy is to bring a sense of sacredness to sexuality in a more earthy, organic, natural, and holistic way. "When the energy of the crystal combines with your own sexual energy, you can expect your chakras to light up, your heart to open, and your body to become more sensitive to subtle sexual energy," says Chakrubs Founder Vanessa Cuccia.

Cuccia came up with the concept in 2011 while living with a spiritualist in Los Angeles who taught her about metaphysics, chakras, and the power of crystals. "I was really drawn to what I learned about the metaphysical properties of crystals," recalls Cuccia. "One day I went to this spiritualist friend's house and she had a huge collection of crystals. When she showed me one particularly beautiful crystal wand, and I saw its phallic shape, something just clicked. There are so many high-tech sex products out there with Wi-Fi and remote controls and very sophisticated technology, and I wanted to create something more intimate in a natural way. There was a real void in the marketplace."

The Chakrub product line includes approximately 20 instruments of pleasure made of 100% pure and organic crystals and stones. Most of them are 7-inches in length and 1-2 inches in girth, weighing less than a pound each and priced between $65 for the Rose Bud kegel ball made of Rose Quartz and $280 for the Amethyst pleasure wand. Custom orders go up to $350, though.

So, how exactly do crystals heal? "Everything is emitting a frequency," explains Cuccia. "Everything has an energy. That's science, and nobody can disprove that. Crystals have the perfect molecular structures that have positive effects on our electro-magnetic fields. They are emitting a very balanced frequency. So we as humans, we're made up of mostly water, and we're delicate in our electromagnetic field."

For those raising their eyebrows, consider this: Have you ever got a bad "vibe" from someone? Or walked into a place and felt something was off? Sure, we all have. That's "energy." "That's because we are all very sensitive," explains Cuccia. "I've walked into a room where there was a fight that happened, and you can feel the energy. We're being affected all the time. So with crystals, they're emitting a very balanced and healthy, harmonious frequency. The more balanced we are, the better we feel and the better our relationships with others and the world is, and, yeah, the more in tune with our bodies and sensuality we are."

Each crystal or stone has its own unique healing properties. The most popular Chakrub is made of pink and white Rose Quartz (The Heart, $114), which is associated with the Heart chakra. "It's considered the crystal of unconditional love. It carries a soft, comforting feminine energy and is associated with not just love, but compassion, peace, tenderness, healing, and comfort. It's great for mending a broken heart," explains Cuccia.

The Amethyst Chakrub

(the company's most expensive product at $280) is associated with the Crown chakra, which is the seventh chakra located at the top of the head and associated with higher states of consciousness. "It's a really good crystal to enhance your dreams, provide calm, balance, and peace within yourself, and is good for people who may have addictive personalities or compulsive behaviors. It's known as 'The Sobriety Stone,'" she says.

Another popular item is the green Original Indian Jade ($150), which is known as "The Stone of Opportunity." "It's said to bring about good luck," says Cuccia, "but also help calm nervousness, anger, and irritation, enhance romantic relationships by re-balancing the Heart Chakra, and quiet roving thoughts."

While this level of spiritual sexuality might seem extremely niche, the concept is taking off with the mainstream. It's not just sex stores that stock the line, but major luxury retailer Brookstone, which is more known for selling high-tech gadgets like Shiatsu massage chairs and zero gravity lounge chairs, is carrying Chakrubs as well. Cuccia has also signed a publishing deal with Lit Riot Press to release a three-book series titled "This Is What I've Come To," which dives into her philosophies on love, intimacy, sexuality, and spirituality.
