Being exposed to constant artificial lighting causes damaging effect to human’s health. A body rhythm, called the circadian clock, based on 24-hour day-night, light-dark cycles are controlled by our “biological clock". These Circadian rhythms control physical, mental and behavioral changes that follow a 24-hour cycle such as the sleep-wake cycle, body temperature, heart rate, and the release of hormones. There is also a "master clock" in the brain that coordinates all the body clocks so that they are in synch.
Around-the-clock light exposure leads to a reduction in the normal rhythmic patterns in the brain's central circadian pacemaker of the SCN by 70 percent. Also other health issues such as muscle loss, immune system disorders and even early signs of osteoporosis appear.
Fortunately the problems with the “master clock" and Circadian rhythms are reversible. Just in 2 weeks after Reinstating normal light-dark cycles the normal rhythmic patterns return.
