Venofer (Iron Sucrose Injection) is prescription medication used to treat iron deficiency anemia (not enough iron in the blood) with chronic kidney disease. It is the first-line IV iron therapy approved for adults and children 2 years or older. Iron Sucrose is an iron replacement product that performs many functions in the body especially transporting oxygen and promoting growth of red blood cells. Venofer should NOT be treated with other forms of anemia not caused by iron deficiency. This medication is given by injection into a vein as directed by your doctor.

We currently have the brand Venofer comes from Canada manufactured Mylan. Venofer is supplied in 5 ml single dose vial packages of 10. Each 5 mL vial contains 100 mg elemental iron (20 mg/mL). Generic Venofer is not available.
The most common side effects of Venofer infusion include:
• Diarrhea;
• Dizziness;
• Headache;
• Itching or irritation at the injection site;
• Nausea;
• Respiratory tract infection;
• Vomiting;
If you suffer any serious side effects as below, please notify your doctor or pharmacist immediately:
• Chest pain;
• Confusion and convulsions;
• Increased blood pressure such as severe headache, anxiety;
• Light-headedness;
Do not take Venofer if you are allergic to Iron Sucrose Injection or other iron injection. Tell your doctor about all the medical conditions you have had before, especially if you have:
• Iron overload (the buildup of excess iron) or hemochromatosis;
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking including prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines including herbal supplements, especially: iron supplements or other iron-based oral medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
