Trilafon (Perphenazine) is a prescription medication used to treat psychotic disorders like schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that causes people to interpret reality abnormally. This disorder is present with hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning. Trilafon reduces nervousness and improves clarity. The drug can also reduce hallucinations, aggressive behavior, and the desire to hurt yourself or others. Perphenazine is also used to treat the manic phase of bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder. The drug is also used to control severe nausea and vomiting. The active ingredient in Trilafon is Perphenazine. Perphenazine belongs to a class of drugs called antipsychotics. It works by restoring the balance of natural substances like dopamine in the brain. Perphenazine is used when patients do not respond to other antipsychotics.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while taking Trilafon. The most common side effects of Trilafon may include the following:
• Dizziness;
• Dry mouth;
• Headache;
• Insomnia;
• Loss of appetite;
• Mild itching
Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Convulsions;
• Paranoia;
• Slow heart rate or shallow breathing;
• Uncontrolled muscle movements in your arms or legs, or face;
• Worsening symptoms of schizophrenia

You should not take Trilafon if you are allergic to Perphenazine or any ingredient in Trilafon. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:

• Have bone marrow depression;
• Have brain damage;
• Have breathing problems like asthma or emphysema;

• Have severe or untreated depression;
• Have urination problems
Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Trilafon and levodopa, scopolamine, amiodarone, fluoxetine, ritonavir, etc. Avoid codeine, lorazepam, cyclobenzaprine, or cetirizine with Trilafon. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Using antipsychotic medication in the third trimester of pregnancy may cause breathing problems, feeding problems, or withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Perphenazine passes into breast milk and may cause undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Take Trilafon precisely as prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication by mouth with or without food. Take this drug at the same time every day to help you remember. It may take a few weeks for your symptoms to improve. Do not stop taking the medication without talking to your doctor. Stopping Trilafon suddenly may make your condition worse. Avoid alcohol while using this drug. Drinking alcohol can increase the side effects of Trilafon. Perphenazine may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or carry out activities that require alertness. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position. Trilafon can make you sunburn easily. Avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning beds. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen (SPF30 or higher) when you are outdoors. Store at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture.
