Promacta (Eltrombopag Olamine) is a prescription medication used to treat low platelet levels in people with a blood disorder called chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and who cannot be treated with other treatments like medications or surgery to remove the spleen. ITP is an ongoing condition that may cause unusual bruising or bleeding due to an abnormally low number of platelets in the blood. The drug is also used to increase the number of platelets in people who have hepatitis C so that they can begin and continue treatment with interferon and ribavirin. The drug may also be used to treat people with aplastic anemia, a particular blood disorder where the body does not make enough new blood cells. The active ingredient in Promacta is Eltrombopag Olamine. Eltrombopag belongs to a class of drugs caked thrombopoietin receptor antagonists. It works by causing the cells in the bone marrow to produce more platelets.
