Prilosec (Omeprazole) is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other problems caused by excess stomach acid. Omeprazole belongs to the family of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which slows and prevents the production of acid within the stomach. This medication is also used to heal the damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid. It may also be combined with antibiotics to treat gastric ulcer caused by infection with helicobacter pylori (H.pylori).

Common side effects include:
• Abdominal pain or stomach pain, diarrhea or loose stools;
• Constipation, gas;
• Dizziness, headache
Serious side effects include:
• Flu symptoms, fever, chill;
• Pain or burning in the mouth or throat;
• Skin rash, itching;
• Vision changes
Omeprazole should not be used for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms. Do not take this medication is you are allergic to omeprazole or to any other benzimidazole medication such as albendazole or mebendazole. Before you start taking the medication, inform your doctor about your medical condition and about all the medication you are taking including OTC and herbal medications. It is unknown whether omeprazole will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. Omeprazole can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.
