Ponstel (Mefenamic acid) is a prescription medication used to treat mild to moderate pain from various conditions in patients older than 14 years. The drug also treats primary dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea is the cramping pain that occurs before or during a menstrual period. The Prostaglandins made in the lining of the uterus causes the blood vessels and muscles in the uterus to contract, causing pain. The active ingredient in Ponstel is Mefenamic acid. Mefenamic acid belongs to a class of drugs called Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by blocking the inflammation process in the body to relieve pain and swelling.
