Polytrim drops (Polymyxin B Sulfate/Trimethoprim) is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections like conjunctivitis and blepharitis of the eye. Trauma, immune deficiencies, improper care of contact lenses, eye surgery, or other diseases can cause bacterial infection in the eye. The active ingredients in Polytrim drops are Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim. Polymyxin B Sulfate and Trimethoprim belong to a class of drugs called antibiotics. Polymyxin B Sulfate works by killing bacteria. Trimethoprim works by stopping the growth of the bacteria. Polytrim drops will only work for bacterial eye infections. This drug will not treat other types of eye infections. Unnecessary use of antibiotics can lead to bacterial infection resistant to antibiotics.

Use Polytrim drops precisely as prescribed by your doctor. This drug is usually applied once every 3 hours for 7 to 10 days. Wash your hands before using the eye drops. Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper of the Polytrim drops above your eye with the tip down. Look up and away from the dropper and squeeze out a drop. Close your eyes for 2 to 3 minutes with your head tipped down without squinting or blinking. Gently press your finger to the inside corner of your eye for about 1 minute to keep the liquid from draining into your tear duct. Wait at least 10 minutes before using any other eye drops your doctor may have prescribed. Use this medication for the prescribed length of time. Skipping doses may increase your risk of further infection resistant to antibiotics. Do not use Polytrim drops while wearing contact lenses. This drug can discolour soft contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using this medicine before putting in your contact lenses. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Store at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
