Motegrity (Prucalopride) is used to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). Motegrity is a selective serotonin type 4 (5-HT4) receptor agonist. Motegrity works by improving how well your stomach and intestines move food through the bowels during digestion. It binds with 5-HT receptors in the colon. By activating these receptors, the colon releases acetylcholine. An increase of acetylcholine increases something called colonic peristalsis, which is the reflexive contraction and release of the colon muscles. This allows for an increase of bowel mobility, and a decrease in constipation. This medication is typically only used when other medications have been ineffective. Other medications for motility disorder may include Linzess, or Reglan.
In another study (An overview of the efficacy and safety of prucalopride for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation - 2019), Marzieh Daniali and Shekoufeh Nikfar, found that "Prucalopride should be considered as one of the safe options for the treatment of CIC especially when previous treatments have failed".
