Micardis (Telmisartan) is used to treat mild to moderate high blood pressure. Telmisartan belongs to a group of medications known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists. This medication reduces blood pressure by blocking the actions of a chemical (angiotensin II) that causes blood vessels to constrict or tighten. Micardis is also used to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, or death from heart problems in people who are at least 55 years old with risk factors for serious heart disorders.
In a study (Telmisartan has the strongest binding affinity to angiotensin II type 1 receptor: comparison with other angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers- 2005). H Kakuta, K Sudoh, M Sasamata found that Micardis (Telmisartan) may have long-lasting blood pressure-lowering effects and superior cardioprotective properties in patients with hypertension due to its strongest AT1 receptor antagonistic ability.
