Magnesium is an over-the-counter medication used to supplement the amount of Magnesium in the body. The body needs magnesium for proper growth and bone maintenance. It is also required for the proper function of nerves, muscles, and other parts of the body. The drug is used as an antacid to relieve heartburn, sour stomach, or acid indigestion. It may also be used as a laxative in the short term. This medicine may also be used for pregnancy complications like pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. Magnesium belongs to a class of drugs called laxatives. It works by neutralizing stomach acid and moving stool through the intestine.
