Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) is a prescription medication used to reduce the number of painful crises caused by sickle cell anemia. The drug also reduces the need for blood transfusions. Sickle cell anemia deprives the organs of blood and oxygen. Lack of oxygen-rich blood can damage the nerves and organs, including the liver, spleen, and kidneys. This drug is not a cure for sickle cell anemia. Hydrea is also used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia, ovarian cancer, and certain types of skin cancer. The active ingredient in Hydrea is Hydroxyurea. Hydroxyurea belongs to a class of drugs called antimetabolites. It works by making the red blood cells bigger, rounder, and more flexible, making them less likely to turn into a sickle shape. It also works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in the body.
