Heartgard Dog (Ivermectin) is a prescription medication used to prevent heartworm disease in dogs. Heartworm disease is a fatal but preventable infection caused by a parasite, Dirofilaria immitis, transmitted by mosquitoes. Heartgard Dog is also used to treat and control ascarids and hookworms. The active ingredient in Heartgard Dog is Ivermectin. Ivermectin belongs to a class of medications called antihelmintics. It works by paralyzing and killing parasites before they grow into adults and cause heartworm disease.

You should not use Heartgard Dog for your pet if it is allergic to Ivermectin or any ingredient in Heartgard Dog. Before you start giving this medication, tell your veterinarian about your dog's medical history, especially if it:
• Is a collie breed;
• Is pregnant or breeding
Tell your veterinarian about all your pet's medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Heartgard Dog and other medicines. Tell your veterinarian if your dog is breeding. It is unknown if Ivermectin is harmful to breeding and lactating dogs. Use this medicine exactly as your veterinarian prescribes. Heartgard Dog is a chewable tablet. Most dogs find Heartgard palatable. You can offer the drug to your dog by hand or add it to a small amount of dog food. Administer the chewable in a way that encourages your dog to chew instead of swallow. You can break the chewable into pieces and feed it to your dog if they normally swallow treats. Monitor your dog to ensure that all parts of the dose are consumed. If you suspect that any part of the dose is lost, redosing is recommended. Give Heartgard to your dog monthly during the period of the year when mosquitoes are active. The initial dose must be given within a month after the dog's first exposure to mosquitoes. The final dose must be given within a month after the dog's last exposure to mosquitoes. If the interval between doses exceeds a month (30 days), the efficacy of Ivermectin can be reduced. Therefore, for optimal performance, the chewable must be given once a month on or about the same day of the month. All dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection before starting treatment with Heartgard. Infected dogs must be treated to remove adult heartworms and microfilariae before initiating treatment with Heartgard. Store this drug at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children. In case of ingestion by humans, visit your doctor immediately.
