Estring Vaginal Ring contains estradiol, a form of estrogen, meant to help treat moderate to severe menopausal changes in and around the vagina. The estrogen ring is a form of estrogen-replacement therapy, or a type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that provides relief of symptoms such as dryness, burning, itching of the vaginal area, as well as urgency to urinate and pain during intercourse. Estrogen is the female sex hormone and its necessary to keep many functions of the body working properly.
A randomized, open, parallel-group study on the preventive effect of an estradiol-releasing vaginal ring (Estring) on recurrent urinary tract infections in postmenopausal women (May 1999), BC Eriksen, American journal of obstetrics and gynecology, found that “Estring is useful to prolong the time to next recurrence among postmenopausal women with recurrent urinary tract infection and to decrease the number of recurrences per year. Estring is safe and well tolerated.”
In another study (Effects of transdermal versus oral hormone replacement therapy in postmenopause: a systematic review, 17 June 2022), MŠ Goldštajn, M Mikuš, FA Ferrari, M Bosco, found that “Considering that the effect on VTE can be considered the clearest and strongest clinical difference between the two administration routes, our systematic review supports the transdermal HRT as safer than the oral administration route.”

You should not use Estring if you have any unusual vaginal bleeding, liver disease, history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clots, if you have an increased risk for blood clots, or a history of hormone-related cancer, nor if you are pregnant. Long-term use of this medication may increase your risk of cancer to the breast, uterus, or ovaries. It can also increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack. You should not smoke while taking this medication, as it increases your risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
