Dilantin (phenytoin) is an anti-epileptic medication that is used to prevent and control seizures. This medication works by slowing down the spread of seizure activity in the brain. Phenytoin may also be used to treat certain types of irregular heartbeats. The recommended starting dose for adults is 100 mg taken three times a day. The children’s dose is based on the age and body weight.

Phenytoin may increase your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes. This medication may harm an unborn baby; however you should not stop taking this medication unless directed by your doctor. Birth control pills, patches, implants, and injections may not work if taken with this medication. You should talk to your doctor about other reliable forms of birth control. Phenytoin passes into breast milk, talk to your doctor before you breast-feed.
