Dexamethasone belongs to the group of drugs known as corticosteroids. It is a steroid that prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. This medication works by reducing inflammation.

We currently have the generic Dexamethasone from Canada. Dexamethasone is available in the strength of 0.5mg, 0.75mg, 2mg and 4mg tablets, 0.5mg/5ml/100ml elixir and 4mg/ml, 10mg/ml vial and injections. The brand name Dexasone is not available.
The common side effects may include changes in menstrual period, dizziness, headache, increased appetite, pain/redness/swelling at the injection site and weight gain. The serious side effects may include:

• Easy bruising/bleeding;
• Fast/slow/pounding/irregular heartbeat;
• Increased thirst/urination;
• Persistent weight gain;
• Shortness of breath;
• Seizures;
• Vision changes
You should not use this medication if you are allergic to Dexamethasone or Sulfites, or if you have a fungal infection anywhere in your body. Steroid medication can weaken your immune system, which means it will be easier for you to get an infection. Before you start using this medication, talk to your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. It is unknown if this medication will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Dexamethasone can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Steroids can affect growth in children.
