Depakote (Divalproex enteric coated) is a prescription medication used to treat seizure disorders. The drug is also used to treat seizures in people with epilepsy who are at least 10 years old. High or low blood sugar, a head injury, infection, drug abuse or very high blood pressure can cause provoked seizures. Depakote is also used to prevent migraine headaches in adults and to treat manic episodes of bipolar disorder. The active ingredient in Depakote is Divalproex. Divalproex is an enteric coated tablet. Divalproex enteric coated belongs to a class of drugs called antiepileptics. It works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. Other seizure control medications include: Depakote ER, Abilify, and Trileptal

In a study (Divalproex Sodium (Depakote) for Alcohol Withdrawal and Relapse Prevention, 2002), LP Longo, T Campbell, S Hubatch - Journal of addictive diseases …found that “the anticonvulsant divalproex sodium (Depa-kote) may be a safe and efficacious alternative to benzodiazepines for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal.”
