Combantrin (Pyrantel Pamoate) is an OTC medication used to treat parasitic worm infections, such as hookworm infections, pinworm infections, and roundworm infections. Combantrin may also be used for other purposes not listed. Combantrin belongs to a class of medications called anthelmintics (anti-worm), and works through its actions as a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent, meaning that it blocks neuromuscular action in the parasite, and effectively paralyzes it. This paralysis causes the parasite to “lose its grip” on the intestinal wall, allowing the patient to excrete the parasites naturally, ending the infection. Take this medication for the entire prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms improve, as the infection may not be fully treated.

Manufacturer Information

Canadian Pharmacy King currently offers the brand Combantrin from Canada manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. It is available in the dosage of 125 mg/12 tabs. The generic alternative of Pyrantel Pamoate is currently unavailable. (Combantrin is available OTC without a prescription but a Picture Id is required to place an order).

The common side effects of Combantrin may include stomach/abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, or headache. Contact your doctor if you notice more serious side effects such as:

• Ongoing headache;
• Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
• Severe dizziness

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. If you notice any severe side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

You should not use Combantrin if you are allergic to Pyrantel Pamoate, if you have liver disease, or if you have a severe nutrition deficiency (malnourished). To make sure Combantrin is safe for you, tell your doctor about any medical conditions you have had, especially if you are anemic. Combantrin should only be used only when clearly needed. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant in order to discuss the potential risks and benefits. It is unknown if Combantrin passes into breastmilk, or if it will harm a nursing baby. Talk to your doctor if you are breast-feeding while using this medication. If you live with other people, all members of the household may need to be treated with Combantrin, as parasites can be spread easily to anyone who has close contact with you. To prevent spreading of the infection, keep nails cut and scrubbed, ensure everyone in the household washes their hands frequently, particularly after bathroom use and before meals, wash all clothing, towels, and bedding frequently, and disinfect toilets, bedrooms, and laundry areas daily.

Always follow your doctors’ instructions if you must give this medication to a child. Combantrin is not approved for use in children younger than 2 years old. This medication may make you drowsy or dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can worsen this side effect. Limit alcoholic beverages, and contact your doctor if you are using marijuana. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how this medication may affect you, as your reactions could be impaired. Combantrin may interact with some medications, especially piperazine (e.g. Entacyl). Tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are currently taking or have recently taken in order to reduce the risk of any possible interactions.
