Atacand Plus (Candesartan/HCTZ) is a combination medication that is used to treat high blood pressure. Candesartan belongs to the group of medications called angiotensin II receptor blockers. Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a group of medications known as diurectics. Candesartan works by relaxing blood vessels which causes the blood pressure to decrease. HCTZ works by helping the body to get rid of excess salt and water. The usual adult dose is one tablet once daily at the same time each day.

We currently have the brand Atacand Plus from Turkey and Canada manufactured by AstraZeneca. The generic Candesartan HCTZ comes from Canada manufactured by Accel Pharma and Sandoz. This medication is available in the strength of 16mg/12.5mg, 32mg/12.5mg, and 32mg/25mg tablets.
Common side effects include:
• Diarrhea;
• Difficulty sleeping;
• Headache;
• Muscle aches;
• Pain in the back;
• Runny nose;
• Sweating
Serious side effects include:
• Chest pain;
• Irregular heartbeat;
• Seizures
You should not use this medication if you allergic to Candesartan/Hydrochlorothiazide or to any other sulfonamide medicine. Before you start taking the medication, talk to your doctor about your medical condition and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. Candesartan/hydrochlorothiazide may raise your blood sugar. This medication may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Use sunscreen or wear protective clothing. Atacand Plus may cause birth defects or fetal death if you take it while you are pregnant. Do not breast-feed while taking this medication because it passes into breast milk. There may be an interaction between Atacand Plus and other medications such as alcohol, amantadine, digoxin, insulin, methotrexate, Vitamin D, warfarin, etc.
