Advair contains fluticasone and salmeterol. Fluticasone is a steroid. Salmeterol is a bronchodilator. Advair prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. It works by relaxing muscles in the airways to improve breathing. Advair is used to prevent asthma attacks. It is also used to prevent flare-ups or worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) associated with chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema.
We currently have the brand manufactured by GSK (also called Seretide) and the generic manufactured (also called Seroflo) by Cipla. It may come from other suppliers around the world. Advair is available in tablet form and strengths of: 100/50, 250/50, and 500/50 mcg. The Rotahaler is used only with Cipla Rotacaps and comes in different colors.
Contact your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
• Difficulty swallowing, breathing, or speaking;
• Skin rash or hives all over the body;
• Sudden wheeziness and chest pain or tightness;
• Swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat, or eyelids;
• Worsening asthma symptoms even after using your reliever medication
Less serious side effects include:
• Dry mouth, nose, or throat;
• Headache, dizziness;
• Hoarseness or deepened voice;
• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
• Stuffy nose, sinus pain, cough, sore throat
Do not use Advair to treat an asthma attack that has already begun. This medication is not a “reliever” medicine. If you start developing asthma symptoms, be sure to use your “reliever” medication for rapid relief of your asthma symptoms. If you are at risk of developing glaucoma or cataracts, have your eyes checked by your doctor before starting long-term treatment with this medication. Fluticasone may cause thrush infection in the mouth and throat. To reduce the risk of infection, gargle with water after each use of this medication. Do not stop this medication abruptly, as this may cause your condition to get worse. It should be stopped gradually as directed by your doctor.
The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
